Position Summary:

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) serves as the senior executive of the Ward Lumber Worker Cooperative (WLWC). The CEO’s primary responsibility is to be fully engaged with the board and management team to plan, direct, coordinate, and control the financial, operating, and human resources of the cooperative, following WLWC policies; to provide effective and satisfactory leadership, benefits and services to participating members, while meeting financial and operational goals and objectives. CEO shall possess significant organizational skills, to manage and direct the organization. The CEO is accountable to the WLWC Board of Directors.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Board Relations and Planning

● In concert with the Board of Directors, establishes an appropriate plan to implement Board-defined goals and policies and evaluate the achievements of annual and long-term growth, service, and financial objectives consistent with the mission of WLWC. Meets with the Board and committees as required.

● Formulates overall business objectives, policies, strategic plans, and annual operations plan for WLWC and designs long-term strategic plans in concert with the Board of Directors' directives, the company’s mission, and vision, incorporating historical and projected operational and business development opportunities.

● Guides the development and implementation of plans and budgets that provide for the timely availability and utilization of physical, financial, and human resources to achieve specified goals.

● Keeps the Board of Directors fully informed of relevant current or emerging issues and trends and maintains an open and cooperative relationship with the Board so that timely and informed decisions may be made. Along these lines, the CEO will prepare and present timely and effective reports to the Board supported with appropriate analysis.

Monitoring business performance and compliance with Board policies and limits defined by the Board.
Set goals & strategies.
Asset liability & risk management.
Manage operations & resources of the company along with how capital is allocated

● Carries out other such general duties and responsibilities that may be assigned by the Board of Directors as necessary.

Management of Staff and Facilities

● Provides leadership in the administration of the business affairs and operations of WLWC

● Implements policies and procedures approved by the Board of Directors; convey to senior management staff changes to company policies and procedures and ensures effective communication of information throughout the organization.

● Monitors the performance of senior staff and, as appropriate, provides guidance to assist in the development or otherwise ensures that senior management staff receives appropriate education and training.

● Ensures WLWC maintains a safe working environment for all team members to minimize accidents and related costs.

● Ensures that all the Ward Lumber Worker Cooperative's legal, tax, and other financial obligations are met and takes necessary action to secure continued stability.

● Meets regularly with staff to ensure that necessary and appropriate communication exists within the organization.

● Evaluates the performance of staff and ensure that the human resource policies, goals, and expectations as set by the Board are being addressed.

Member and External relationships

● Acts directly or through appropriate staff to ensure the existence of proper liaisons to the WLWC membership, business partners, public officials, government agencies, legislative bodies, committees, and the news media.

● Provides opportunities for and facilitates participation in cooperative education, business, and financial education, and democratic management for the members.

● Develops and maintains an effective and harmonious relationship with the membership to ascertain needs; respond to questions, concerns, and suggestions; improve cooperative participation, and promote common goals.

● Directs the development of products and services necessary for the growth and prosperity of the WLWC membership

● Is actively engaged in leading and or facilitating member recruitment and retention.

● Attends WLWC events as their schedule allows.

● Is actively engaged in customer relations.

● Executive-level management skills are preferred.

Operations

● Assigns duties and responsibilities to functional areas and executive staff, ensuring that responsibilities are delegated effectively throughout the organization.

● Manages and directs the ongoing operations of all profit centers within WLWC and recommends, plans, budgets, and implements improvement projects, practices, and procedures to maximize operating profits.

● Assures all plans are consistent with the mission, vision, and values of the company to meet its financial goals.

● Ensures the organization achieves its primary objectives based on profit, return on capital, and worker-owner values.

● Devises effective solutions to situations encountered based on the general goals and objectives of the company.

Technical Knowledge & Skills

● Possesses advanced level business skills, including written and verbal communications skills, computational and computer skills, and financial knowledge frequently acquired through completion of an Associate’s or Bachelor’s Degree program.

● Performance of the duties and responsibilities of the job requires the equivalent of extensive formal training in business management, including an understanding of the application of the theory and practices of the profession to the operations of the organization, like an Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in business or accounting.

● Demonstrates management and financial skills in dealing with all phases of business operations.

● Lumber & building materials experience preferred.

Communications Skills

● Possesses the ability to communicate, mentor, and motivate effectively as a leader.

● Effectively communicates opinions and extrapolations of information collected and synthesized/analyzed.

● Negotiates resolutions to complex situations which may be inherently adversarial.

● Determines appropriate methods of communicating information through the use of tables, graphs, charts, and other visual forms.

● Prepares and executes presentations to large groups.

Networking and Association Relationships

● Establishes and maintains an effective relationship among cooperatives of all sectors and the business community, government and other institutions, and the general public, to support and encourage the work of consumer-oriented organizations, cooperatives, and other people-centered groups which share a common philosophy with cooperatives.

● Networks with appropriate organizations as necessary to help further the goals and objectives of the WLWC.

Environment/Working Conditions:

Must be able to work outside of normal business hours. Travel within and outside of New York may be

required with occasional overnight stays. The first 2 years should be able to work on location 3 days a week

and the other 2 days can be remote.

● Salary range - $110k + commensurate with experience level

CDL DRIVER (FT/PT)

Primary Duties:

  • Drive delivery truck to customer delivery sites.
  • Pull and assemble orders from invoices, stage orders, loads, and secure orders on delivery vehicles.
  • Unload and check materials with invoices for accuracy and condition of deliveries.
  • Operate Boom truck crane & piggyback forklift when necessary.
  • Complete daily inspection reports and logs.
  • Assist in housekeeping / maintenance of vehicles, equipment, warehouses and yard areas.

Position Requirements:

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Class B Driver’s License.
  • Clean driving record.
  • Able to lift within OSHA Heavy Lifting guidelines.
  • Able to work flexible schedule.
  • Must have a valid driver's license and be able to pass a drug test and pre-employment physical.

CUSTOMER SERVICE (FT/PT)

Primary Duties:

  • Provides professional, friendly and courteous sales and customer service to our homeowner and contractor community.
  • Serves customers on a walk-in, on phone and email basis.
  • Provides computer and manually generated quotes on requested lumber, building materials, paint and hardware.
  • Helps maintain store in a safe, neat, orderly and well merchandised manner.

Position Requirements:

  • High School diploma or GED.
  • Computer literate in Windows, Microsoft Office. Able to prioritize job functions in order to handle multiple tasks.
  • Able to communicate with good written, oral & listening skills.
  • Must be outgoing, energetic & customer service oriented.
  • Able to work flexible schedule as required.
  • Must have a valid driver's license and be able to pass a drug test and pre-employment physical.
